EASTON, Pa. -- Lafayette swept Delaware State, 3-1 and 8-0, in a doubleheader on Saturday, using the hot hitting of Brooke Wensel and dominant pitching performances by Stephanie Thomas and Kristyn Marinelli.
In the opener, the teams traded runs in the first inning with Delaware State using three singles to take the early lead. Khaliyah Flournory accounted for the third single and the RBI. For the Leopards, Samantha Sweigart led off with a double over the head of the leftfielder and Thomas plated her with a two-out single that ricocheted off DSU pitcher Alexis Goldsby to knot the game at 1-1.
The Leopards ended the top of the second inning when Brooke Wensel turned a 6-6-3 doubleplay. She led off the bottom of the second and ripped the first offering over the wall in right centerfield for the 2-1 lead.
In the third, Lafayette extended the margin to 3-1 when Kristyn Marinelli belted a single off the pitcher's glove to centerfield, one of four hits in the inning.
Meanwhile Thomas (5-7) was cruising on the mound, facing just 26 batters over seven innings for the victory. She allowed one run while scattering five hits with no walks. Goldsby (1-2) took the loss, giving up three runs on seven hits in three innings.
In game two, the Leopard offense kept clicking, using a four-run second inning to pull away to an 8-0 triumph in five innings.
The Leopards struck for two runs in the bottom of the second. Brooke Wensel continued her hot day with a two-out, RBI-single to left. They picked up a second run on the second Delaware State (17-27) error of the inning.
Jenna Orlando led off the second inning with a triple off the wall in right field. Sweigart also went the opposite way, plating Orlando with a sac fly as Lafayette led 3-0. Three more came in to score, two on a fielding error against a pulled-in infield and another on a Marinelli sac fly. Lafayette stretched the lead to 6-0.
The Leopards put away the game in the fourth inning. They took advantage of a fielding error and Thomas (RBI-groundout) and Brooke Wensel (sac fly) each drove in a run in the rally.
Marinelli (1-7) recorded her first circle victory of the season, allowing just three hits over five innings while striking out one. Jessica Shalongo (3-5) was handed the loss, surrendering six runs (one earned) on five hits in 1.1 innings.
