EASTON Pa. -- Army's Renee Poirier struck out five in a 1-0 win over Lafayette on Sunday. Her no-hit performance overshadowed a strong pitching effort from Leopard hurler Stephanie Thomas in the series finale.
Thomas faced just 26 batters on the afternoon, scattering five hits. The only one that mattered in the 1-0 final was the solo home run Katie Ontiveros lifted over the fence in right centerfield. Ontiveros' second home run of the season could have done more damage, because just prior to the homer Maddie Wensel had thrown out a base-stealing attempt by pinch runner Tyler McKinney.
The Leopards had their best offensive chance to score in the bottom of the same inning as Jenna Orlando drew a one-out walk. Two batters later with Orlando at second after a fielder's choice, Brooke Wensel was hit by a Poirier offering. The next batter Kristyn Marinelli grounded out to end the inning.
Poirier (10-5) struck out five of the 23 batters she faced in the win for Army (27-11, 7-2). Thomas (2-4) fanned one and did walk a batter in one of her strongest outings of the season.
Lafayette (4-16, 1-8) next plays on Wednesday, hosting Villanova in a doubleheader at 3 p.m.
