EASTON, Pa. – The Lafayette College men's soccer used Tuesday night's non-conference matchup with Rutgers as an opportunity to rest some of the regulars as it fell to the Big Ten opponent, 4-1, at Oaks Stadium.
One Leopard who did not see his minutes shortened was junior
Ryan Goncalves who had the lone Lafayette goal in the 15
th minute. Freshman
Will Echeverria made a long throw-in that was deflected out of the box where Goncalves was there to take it out of mid-air and put it in the back of the net for his first goal of 2018.
Freshman
Jack Cisneros made his collegiate debut in goal for the Leopards (5-5-3, 1-2-2 PL) as he made two saves in all 90 minutes of action. Also netting their first career starts of the year were junior
Zack Capolongo and freshmen
Max Ippolito and Connor O'Donnell against the Scarlet Knights (4-9-1, 2-4 B1G).
Also not seeing the night off was reigning Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week was senior captain
Joe DeStefano who continued his consecutive-minutes played streak, now up to 1,240 in 2018.
Overall, Lafayette matched Rutgers in shots with 10 and shots on goal with six, including Goncalves' three shots on target. The Maroon and White took more corners than Rutgers, 6-5.
The Leopards enter the home stretch of the season with four Patriot League contests remaining on the schedule, two at home and two on the road, starting with a trip to Colgate on Saturday with kickoff scheduled for 4 p.m. with both squads looking to make a push into the League tournament.
