HAMILTON, N.Y. – The Lafayette men's soccer team couldn't find its offense on Saturday afternoon in Hamilton, New York, falling by a 2-0 score to defending Patriot League champion Colgate.
Colgate, coming off a 2017 campaign in which it advanced to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament, took advantage of its opportunities on Saturday, scoring a goal midway through both halves to decide it. The Raiders improve to 7-3-5 overall this season and 3-1-2 in Patriot League play, while Lafayette drops to 5-6-3 overall and 1-3-2 in conference action.
The Leopard defense hung tough through the first part of the opening half as freshman goalkeeper
Alex Sutton made a couple of key stops and junior co-captain
Christian Williams saved a ball off the line in the 19
th minute. The Raiders eventually broke through, though, in the 25
th minute as Tim Oberg was able to corral the ball amidst a scrum in the box following a corner and flick the ball into the left side for the 1-0 lead.
The score remained at 1-0 through the halftime break as the Leopards continued to look for an equalizer. Unfortunately, Colgate was able to add a second tally in the 74
th minute to give the home side some insurance as the Raiders' Kian Alberto found a streaking Freddy Jonsson, who beat Sutton for the second marker.
Sutton kept the Leopards in it throughout the day, but they couldn't find enough pressure up the field to mount a comeback in the 2-0 defeat. The rookie keeper finished with six saves in his fifth loss of the season.
The home side led in shots by an 18-4 margin and corners, 6-1. Each team was called for one offsides on the day and Raiders' keeper Jacob Harris picked up the win without making a save.
Lafayette returns to Mike Bourger '44 Field at Oaks Stadium on Wednesday, hosting Navy at 7 p.m.
