Men's Soccer Stifled by Navy

Leopards need to make a push with two games to play

EASTON, Pa. – The Lafayette College men's soccer team played 78 minutes of scoreless soccer on Wednesday night before a late charge by Navy handed the Leopards a 2-0 decision at Oaks Stadium.

Lafayette (5-7-3, 1-4-2 PL) registered four of its five total shots via the header and had three go just above the crossbar as junior Martin Ssessanga had an opportunity in the 28th minute and classmate Christian Williams just missed his try in the 66th on a corner kick by sophomore Andrew Venezia.

Junior James Gibson saw the field for the first time since Sept. 22 and had one of those header attempts off a beautiful centering pass from Ssessanga in the 32nd minute.

Navy (3-11-1, 2-5 PL) finally opened the scoring when a deflected ball went right to the foot of the Midshipmen's leading scorer Jacob Williams who buried it from just outside the box. William's also notched the late insurance goal for Navy in the 89th minute.

Freshman goal keeper Alex Sutton played all 90 minutes for the Leopards, totaling four saves on the night while six other Leopards joined him on the field for the entire contest, including senior Joe DeStefano who has played every minute of 2018.

Lafayette will now turn its attention to Saturday's contest at American at 2 p.m. before returning home for the finale of the 2018 regular season at Mike Bourger '44 Field at Oaks Stadium on Nov. 3 against Loyola.
