Leopards Drop Last Second Heartbreaker

Cantwell’s heroic play in final minute gives the Leopards a chance

EASTON, Pa. – The Lafayette women's basketball team suffered a heartbreaking loss as senior Alex Cantwell scored eight points in the final minute of the game, including a 3-pointer with seven seconds left to tie the game, but ultimately fell to Saint Peter's by a 62-60 final on Tuesday night at Kirby Sports Center.

With 1:09 left in the game, Saint Peter's (3-2) was ahead 59-50 after Zoe Pero hit a pair of free throws. Cantwell drew a foul away from the basket and went 2-for-2 at the line to bring Lafayette (3-1) deficit to seven.

After an empty Peacock possession, sophomore Drew Freeland grabbed a rebound which led to the first of two Cantwell 3-pointers in the final 40 seconds.

With 27 seconds left, sophomore Natalie Kucowski grabbed a steal and Cantwell drew another foul, converting on both free throws to make it a two-point game.

Out of a Saint Peter's timeout, Kucowski picked up her fifth foul and Briyanah Richardson converted just 1-of-2 free throws. Freshman Nicole Johnson found the hot-hand and Cantwell delivered another deep 3-pointer to tie the game at 60 with 12 seconds remaining.

Without a timeout, Saint Peter's took it quickly the other way and Richardson was called for the offensive foul when Cantwell stepped in with four seven seconds remaining, but the Glen Head, New York native was injured on the play and left the game.

The Leopards could not take advantage of the Peacock turnover, as they committed one of their season-high 20 turnovers on the ensuing possession which forced Johnson to take a foul and Pero converted the deciding free throws.

Cantwell finished the game with 10 points, three steals and a rejection while Kucowski pushed her double-double streak to four games with 17 points and 14 rebounds to go along with four assists, four blocks and three steals.

The Peacocks only had four players record points with three in double-figures as Richardson led all scorers with 28 points, going 4-of-6 from beyond the arc.

Lafayette got off to a cold start, shooting just 4-of-17 in the first quarter and fell behind 18-9 before charging back to outscore Saint Peter's 14-5 in the second to head into halftime tied at 23.

Junior Tasha Vipond provided a spark off the bench in the third quarter, going 3-for-3 from the field and scoring six points all in the second half.

Saint Peter's began to really heat up from deep as D'Aviyon Magazine hit a deep 3-pointer as time expired in the third to give the Peacocks a 38-36 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Overall, the visitors shot it 53 percent from beyond the arc, going 10-of-19 in the game.

That trend continued to start the fourth as Richardson hit a pair of treys in the first minute of the period to jump out to a 44-38 advantage.

But the Leopards fought back as Kucowski grabbed an offensive board and found sophomore Drew Freeland wide open for the layup and classmate Olivia Martino hit back-to-back 3-pointers to cut the deficit to one, 48-47, with 3:08 remaining.

Martino scored 13 points with six rebounds and two assists and Freeland added nine with five boards and four assists.

Freshman Makaila Wilson grabbed a season-high nine rebounds, all of them in the first half, missing much of the second due to foul trouble and fouled out with five minutes remaining.

The Maroon and White will turn the attention to the FAU Thanksgiving Tournament as the Leopards take on host Florida Atlantic on Friday and play either Bradley or Delaware on Saturday in tournament play.
