EASTON, Pa. - The Lafayette baseball team split the first half of a four-game set against rival Lehigh on Sunday afternoon, earning a 1-0 win in its home opener while Lehigh ended the afternoon with a 5-2 victory at Kamine Stadium.
Game 1
A strong start on the mound from Brett Kreyer and some timely hitting proved to be the winning formula for the Leopards in game one. Kreyer twirled 5.2 innings against the Mountain Hawks, dueling Lehigh's Levi Stoudt. The sophomore held Lehigh to three hits and kept them off the scoreboard while racking up four strikeouts. Michael Dunn finished out the seven-inning game on the mound, securing the shutout to move to 3-0 on the year. Stoudt took the loss on the mound to move to 2-4.
Lafayette was able to put pressure on the Mountain Hawks early and threatened in the bottom of the first inning. Senior co-captain Luke Robinson reached first base on error from Lehigh's shortstop and was moved to second on a single from John Marti. Spencer Rouse singled into center field and Robinson rounded third but was cut down at home plate. The Maroon and White left the inning without a run but carried the momentum from there.
Kreyer set the Mountain Hawks down in order in the second, third and fourth innings before getting the first two outs of the sixth. Dunn entered the game and forced a ground out to keep the game scoreless at 0-0 heading into the bottom half of the inning.
With one out, Patrick Nelson laced a double into right field to give the Leopards a runner in scoring position. Mark Glover pushed the Leopards ahead in the next at-bat, sending a single into left center that easily scored Nelson. The Leopards couldn't plate anymore runs, but a 1-0 lead was all they needed.
Dunn worked in-and-out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the seventh to preserve the victory. After a walk loaded the bases with two outs, Dunn forced a ground ball that sealed the 1-0 win for the Maroon and White.
Game 2
An early deficit was the difference for the Leopards once again this season in game two, as they weren't able to mount a comeback attempt against the Mountain Hawks. Peter Moore (2-3) earned the win on the mound for Lehigh while Kenny Campbell (1-2) was on the wrong side for Lafayette.
Lehigh was able to jump on the Maroon and White early, grabbing a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Campbell was able to settle in following the hiccup, working a 1-2-3 inning in the second while keeping Lehigh off of the scoreboard until the fifth inning.
The Leopards were able to get one run back in the bottom of the fifth, cutting Lehigh's lead to 3-1. Marti did the damage for the Maroon and White, hitting a grounder to second base that allowed Quentin Bubb to score from third. Rouse wore a pitch in the next at-bat, giving the Leopards a bases-loaded opportunity, but they couldn't capitalize and headed into the sixth inning down by two.
Lehigh added runs in the top of the sixth and the ninth, taking a 5-1 lead as the Leopards came to the plate in the bottom of the ninth. Robinson got on with a one-out single and swiped second to put himself into scoring position. Marti worked a walk to give the Maroon and White two baserunners while Rouse moved them into scoring position with a ground ball to second base. Nelson loaded the bases after being hit by a pitch and Glover worked a two-out walk to make it 5-2. That was as close as the Leopards would get however as Lehigh held on for the win.
The Leopards close out the series against Lehigh with a doubleheader on Monday afternoon. The first game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
