Leopards Fall to Lehigh at Home

April 10, 2018

Box Score

EASTON, Pa. -- The Lafayette baseball team fell at home to rival Lehigh on Tuesday afternoon, dropping the league matchup by a final score of 7-1.

The loss drops the Leopards to 12-18 overall with a 2-9 record in the Patriot League. Lehigh improves to 12-18 on the year with a 2-8 mark in league play.

The Maroon and White had trouble at the plate all afternoon as the trio of Matt Kozemchack, Peter Woltersdorf and Ethan Frohman were able to solve Lafayette's lineup. John Marti recorded the Leopards' lone hit, finishing 1-for-2 with two walks at the dish. Lafayette was able to put runners' on-base during the contest with six walks and two Lehigh errors, but couldn't find the hits when it needed them.

Lehigh struck first generating offense by playing small-ball in the first inning. Coupled with a Lafayette miscue, the Mountain Hawks went up 2-0. Lafayette threatened in the bottom half of the frame as Luke Robinson worked a one out walk and went first-to-third on Marti's single. However, the Maroon and White couldn't capitalize with runners on the corners as Lehigh earned the final out to keep the Leopards down.

Mark Anderson settled in following the first inning hiccup and struck out the side in the second inning. Lehigh added another run in the third inning before a pickoff move from Anderson led to perfectly executed run-down that got the Leopards out of the frame.

Trailing 5-0, the Maroon and White got on the board in the sixth inning, manufacturing one run. Robinson reached on an error to set the table while Marti and Spencer Rouse followed with back-to-back walks to give the Maroon and White a bases-loaded opportunity with no outs. Patrick Nelson brought home Robinson with a sharply hit grounder to second, but that was all the offense to be had in the frame.

Ethan Frohman stifled the Leopards from there as Lehigh tacked on one more run in the eighth inning to earn the 7-1 victory.

The Maroon and White take a break from Patriot League play tomorrow afternoon when they head to New Brunswick, N.J. to battle Rutgers. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
