Marist Closes Out Softball's Home Slate

EASTON, Pa.-- Lafayette softball closed out its 2018 home slate with 13-2 and 4-3 losses in a doubleheader vs. Marist on Wednesday at Metzgar Fields.

In game one, Marist scored nine runs in the fourth and fifth innings to pull away. The Red Foxes staked their starter, Kallen Leeseberg, to a four-run lead early in the game. They scored three in the first on a pair of RBI-singles and a sac fly. Kourtney Paul extended the lead to 4-0 with a solo home run to lead off the third inning.

Marist cracked open the game with five runs in the top of the fourth before the Leopards got on the board in the bottom of the inning. Stacy Gordon (2-for-2) and Morgan Biddle each plated Leopard runs with singles to put the score at 9-2.

The visitors finished off the game with four runs in the fifth. Ali Milan (two-run homer) and Paul (solo homer) belted back-to-back home runs in the inning for the 13-2 final in five innings.

Gordon (0-14) allowed seven earned runs on 10 hits in 3.1 innings, striking out one while walking two in the loss. Leeseberg (5-9) surrendered one unearned run on two hits in 3.2 innings for the circle victory.

In game two, the Leopards scored three runs in the first inning of a game that was close throughout. Maddie Wensel doubled in Paige Grover and Samantha Sweigart for the 2-0 advantage. Miranda Skurla brought Wensel the rest of the way home with an RBI-double for the 3-0 lead.

Marist (23-27) answered with four runs in the top of the third inning. Milam (walk), Paul (single), Amanda Sartori (walk) and Miranda Perez (fielder's choice) were all responsible for runs.

The Leopards looked to tie the game in the sixth inning. Brooke Wensel led off with an infield single, but was retired at third base on a fielder's choice. The Leopards left two runners on in the inning.

In the seventh, Sweigart managed a two-out single, but the game ended on the third groundout of the inning. In the game, Sweigart tied the Lafayette career record for being hit by a pitch (35), held by Gianna Lopreato '06.

Megan Beiermeister (11-8) claimed the win, allowing three runs on three hits in four innings. Nicole Teague earned the save, pitching the final three innings while holding Lafayette scoreless. Alexis Randall (5-17) giving up four runs on seven hits with three walks and a pair of strikeouts.

Lafayette (7-39) closes out the season with a three-game weekend series at Army. First pitch each day is slated for noon.
