Women's Soccer Suffers First Setback at Delaware

Early goal by Blue Hens is only tally in 1-0 contest

Newark, Del. - Lafayette had more shots on goal than their opponent on Friday evening, but were unable to find the equalizer in a 1-0 loss to Delaware at Grant Stadium.  It was the first loss for the Leopards after opening the 2018 campaign with three home wins.

After a roughly 30-minute weather delay to push back the start, the Blue Hens struck early with a goal in the third minute by Riley Curtin. It was the first time Lafayette trailed on the season. Undeterred, the Leopards were able to generate a few good scoring opportunities, particularly in the final 45 minutes.

Lafayette was turned away three times in the first 20 minutes of the second half as an attempt by sophomore Krista Kissell in the 57th minute was sandwiched between a pair of shots on target by senior midfield Gabrielle Martone in the 49th and 62nd minutes.  All three chances were thwarted by Delaware keeper Kamryn Stabelin and the Blue Hens defense to keep the visitors off of the board.

The Leopards finished with 10 shots, with five on goal - two apiece from Kissell and Martone and one from senior midfield Katie Brannigan. Sophomore goalkeeper Maggie Pohl was credited with two saves and still boasts an impressive GAA of .50 on the season.

Lafayette returns home to Mike Bourger '44 Field at Oaks Stadium at 2 p.m. on Sunday for a non-league contest against Hartford. The Hawks defeated Patriot League foe Holy Cross 1-0 on Thursday.
