Easton, Pa. - After battling Hartford to a scoreless first 45 minutes, Lafayette surrendered a pair of goals in the first three minutes of the second half that proved to be the difference in a 2-0 loss to the Hawks at Mike Bourger '44 Field at Oaks Stadium. The loss was the second of the season and first at home for the Leopards after opening the season with three victories.
Lafayette ran into a a road-tested opponent that improved to 4-0 on the season away from home and generate offense up and down a deep lineup. Ten different players have found the net through six games for Hartford including three who have scored three or more goals. Gabriela Gamory recorded her team-leading fourth of the season to get the Hawks on the board followed less than a minute later by the first of the season for Julia Carr.
"Full credit to them. We were beaten by a better team today," said Lafayette head coach
Mick Statham. "I was disappointed with the way we played today but I don't want to take anything away from Hartford. Once we went down 0-2 what made it harder was we didn't see much of the ball all day. We didn't create enough chances to dig us out of that hole."
On an afternoon when shots were hard to come by for Lafayette, perhaps the best opportunity of the day came when freshman
Sophia Hudson created a turnover in the Lafayette offensive end and eluded one defender to find herself inside the box. Before Hudson could pull the trigger, however, the Hartford defense recovered to poke the ball away.
Maggie Pohl helped keep the Hawks off the board with three first half saves, including two when she stoned Taylor Brown's shot and subsequent rebound late in the first half.
"The trick during the season is not to get too high with the highs and too low with the lows," said Statham. "Our approach has to be right and, if it is, we will give ourselves a chance."
Next up for the Leopards are a pair of road games in the state of Connecticut, starting off with a match at Fairfield on Friday followed by a contest against Central Connecticut on Sunday.
