Army West Point Edges Women's Soccer

A first half goal is enough for Black Knights in 1-0 affair

WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Lafayette women's soccer team outshot their opponent, including several quality chances, but came up on the short end of a 1-0 decision to Army West Point in a contest that included a one-hour weather delay in the second half.

The Leopards had perhaps their best opportunity of the evening in the 13th minute when senior defender Annika Sheehan made a deep run down the right sideline before sending a cross to the 18-yard box that was received by Katie Brannigan. The senior midfielder made one touch to her left and then rifled a left-footed shot past Army goalkeeper Sydney Cassalia that caught the left post and stayed out of the net.

The Black Knights had the better of the action over the ensuing twenty minutes or so and took the lead on a singular effort by Erynn Johns. The sophomore forward created a turnover in the Lafayette end and beat a defender before sending a shot over Leopards goalkeeper Maggie Pohl for her second goal of the season.

The Leopards eventually regained control of the action, especially during the closing minutes of the first half and for much of the final 45 minutes of the contest. This was most notably the case in the first 10 minutes after halftime when the visitors had three quality chances. Alex Stanford put a direct kick deep in the box but Cassalia was able to punch the ball over the goal. A few minutes later, Stanford had another opportunity but Cassalia recorded the save en route to her eighth shutout of the season.

The contest was then halted with 35:02 remaining, not by the rain but by lightning in the area, as the two teams retreated to the locker rooms while the system moved through the area. When play resumed, Lafayette continued to push but was unable to generate as much quality offensive pressure as they had prior to the delay.

The Leopards registered 11 shots, five on goal, and had seven corner kicks. These totals were the highest they had achieved since a 3-0 win over Saint Peter's one month ago. Pohl was credited with three saves on the evening.

Lafayette is now 4-6 overall and 1-2 in the Patriot League. Army improves to 6-1-5 and 2-0-1 in the Patriot League. The Leopards next Patriot League contest is at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Boston University.
