BALTIMORE – The Lafayette women's basketball team outscored Loyola 28-8 in the paint on Sunday afternoon, but could not overcome an unconscious third quarter shooting performance by the Greyhounds, falling 62-50 at Reitz Arena.
Loyola (2-15, 1-5 PL) opened the second half hitting on its first five 3-pointers after going just 2-for-9 in the first half. The Greyhounds matched their season high for points in a quarter with 31 in the third, making seven of their 10 treys in the frame.
The Leopards (6-11, 1-5 PL) featured its frontcourt in double-figures as sophomore
Natalie Kucowski had a team-high 16 points and eight rebounds to go along with four assists while freshman
Makaila Wilson scored 10 points with three rebounds.
Wilson got hot early, scoring eight of her points in the first half and shooting 4-of-6 from the floor before fouling out in the fourth quarter.
After assisting on 6-of-8 field goals in the first half, Lafayette answered on the Greyhounds' first 3-pointer of the second half the old fashioned way, when Kucowski converted the bucket with the foul and made the free throw to make it 24-23 in favor of Loyola.
From there, the Greyhounds outscored Lafayette 28-9 in the period to give Loyola a 21-point lead entering the fourth quarter.
The Leopards did not go away, besting Loyola 19-10 in the final 10 minutes, while committing a season-low 11 turnovers on the afternoon.
Freshman
Jiselle Havas teamed up with sophomore
Olivia Martino to outscore Loyola 14-2 in the final 3:41 of regulation. The duo each scored 10 points in the game and had two assists apiece, a career high for Havas, while Martino grabbed four rebounds.
