Leopards Roll to First PL Win of the Season

All five starters in double-figures for Lafayette

EASTON, Pa. – Sophomore Olivia Martino hit a career-high five 3-pointers and all five Lafayette starters were in double-figures as the Leopards never trailed Sunday afternoon at Kirby Sports Center, defeating Holy Cross, 73-63, for their first Patriot League win of the season.

It was the first time since Jan. 2, 2009 that Lafayette featured all five of its starters in double-figures, led by Martino's 17 points and sophomore Natalie Kucowski's 15.

Lafayette (6-7, 1-1 PL) shot a scorching 64 percent from the field in the first quarter, led by Martino's two deep tallies and sophomore Drew Freeland's 5-of-6 shooting in the frame.

The productivity was nearly matched as Holy Cross (8-5, 0-2 PL) came out shooting above 50 percent in the opening 10 minutes, as well, to go into the second quarter with the Leopards leading, 20-16.

Lafayette was able to close the half on a 13-5 run, as Martino and sophomore Natalie Kucowski each hit triples, matching the team's season high in 3-pointers on the year with nine in the game.

Along with her 15 points, Kucowski recorded her eighth double-double of the season with 15 rebounds while adding seven steals, three assists and a rejection to her stat line.

Sophomore Olivia Martino hit a career-high five 3-pointers and made the 50th of her Lafayette career to grab a share of 16th on the Lafayette all-time 3-point field goals list. She matched Brya Freeland '15 and became the fastest player in program history to hit 50 3-pointers, doing so in just 43 games.

Both teams came out of the locker room connecting on their first field goals as freshman Makaila Wilson hit a deep jumper to open the second half and Holy Cross' Megan Swords quickly answered at the other end. Martino's hot hand stayed dialed in during the break, as she came right back with a 3-pointer to give Lafayette a 12-point advantage a minute into the third quarter.

The Leopards earned their largest lead of the game after the Patriot League's leading scorer Lauren Manis only converted 1-of-2 free throws and freshman Makaila Wilson made a layup on the other end to make it a 13-point advantage, 45-32.

Lafayette's defense was tremendous, forcing Manis to shoot just 4-of-13 from the field for 12 points instead of her usual 20-plus per game.

Wilson recorded the second double-double of her Lafayette career with 12 points and 10 rebounds and it was the second time in three games that she teamed up with Kucowski for a double-double in the same game.

After that, the Crusaders managed an 8-0 run that forced a Lafayette timeout with 1:39 left in the third. Lafayette was able to keep its lead, 47-42, to go into the final 10 minutes up five.

After four unanswered from Holy Cross to open the fourth, sophomore Drew Freeland knocked down a deep triple to get some breathing room back.

Freeland finished the afternoon with 13 points, three assists and a steal.

The next bucket came on a baseline inbounds play that worked just like the Leopards drew it up as freshman Nicole Johnson hit Kucowski on the opposite block for a wide open layup to take a 52-46 advantage with 6:30 to play.

With a four-point lead and 3:30 to play, senior Alex Cantwell hit a big time 3-pointer off the feed from Johnson to stretch the lead to 56-49.

Cantwell helped the Leopards reach their season-high 15 steals on the afternoon with three of her own. She also dished out four assists to go along with her seven points.

With under two minutes remaining, Holy Cross was forced to foul and hope as the Leopards converted 12-of-14 free throws in the final 1:46 to ice the game.

Johnson had a career-high 11 points, going 8-of-10 from the foul line, with four assists and three steals.

Lafayette matched a season low with 15 turnovers on the afternoon and scored its regulation season-high 73 points, as the Leopards also scored 73 against Monmouth in overtime earlier this season.

The Maroon and White now travel to Colgate for a noon tip-off on Jan. 9 before returning back to Kirby for Alumni Day, hosting Bucknell on Jan. 12.
