EASTON, Pa. – The Lafayette men's soccer team shutout three-time defending Patriot League champions Colgate, 3-0, Saturday night to improve to 4-1 in league action and stay a perfect 6-0 at home.
"We scored two in the first and keeping a shutout throughout the entire match I thought was just a great performance by the boys," head coach
Dennis Bohn said.
It didn't take long for Lafayette (8-3-1 (4-1-0) to break through Colgate's (2-7-4 (1-3-1)) defense with senior
Ryan Goncalves finding the back of the net first off assists by both sophomore
Andrew Venezia and sophomore
Marcos Kitromilides, for his fifth goal of the season to put the Leopards up 1-0.
The Raider's defense held strong, not allowing the Leopards to take another shot until the 23
rd minute. But that shot would be from freshman
Yiannis Panayides for his fourth goal of the season off a cross fed to him by Kitromilides again and senior
James Gibson making it 2-0, Lafayette.
The half would end with a flurry of substitutions and close shots by both sides with neither being able to get one past the other's goalkeeper.
The second half saw both sides playing solid defense with both seeming to go shot for shot. It looked like the game would end in a 2-0 victory for the Leopards until freshman
Hale Lombard found the back of the net from Kitromilides, with just seven seconds left on the clock to make it 3-0.
"We've just been really trying to preach creativity and they are building confidence off of that and that little bit of freedom that they have," Bohn said, "And you can see that in the amount of goals we've scored."
The Leopards three goals on the night brings their total goals through 12 games to 29. They scored 12 goals total last season.
Sophomore
Alex Sutton was solid in between the pipes, recording his sixth shutout of the season and the 11
th of his career. The New York, New York native recorded six saves in tonight's match.
Kitromilides led the way for the Leopards, assisting on all three of the Leopards goals along with one shot on goal of his own. Lombard, to go along with his last second goal, recorded two shots as well. Â Senior
Dylan Royalty, sophomore
Nick Hazel, junior
Martin Ssessanga, Gibson and sophomore
Sebastian Varela also recorded shots for the Maroon and White, helping the Leopards to out shoot the Raiders 13-9.
