Volleyball's Strong Start Not Enough to Beat Lehigh

The Leopards now stand at 2-7 in Patriot League action

BETHLEHM, Pa – The Lafayette College volleyball team fell in four sets to rival Lehigh Saturday afternoon.

Lafayette (13-12 (2-7)) was led by freshman Ellie Carrera-Justiz with 16 kills and 25 total attacks. Right behind her was sophomore Grace Tulevech with 15 kills and 37 total attacks and sophomore Leanna Deegan with 13 kills and 40 total attacks.

The first set started off strong for the Leopards with back-to-back kills by Tulevech to put the Leopards up early. After a Lehigh (13-11 (6-4)) service error, the Leopards went on a three-point scoring run to stretch their lead to 5-1. From there, the Maroon and White never let go of the lead. The Mountain Hawks would attempt a comeback and tie the score up at 22 apiece but it was Carerra-Justiz who would record back-to-back kills to close out the set one victory.

The Mountain Hawks were looking for revenge in the second set and came out looking to get it. They would get the first point of the set off a Lafayette service error and from there the set would see the score tied five times before Lehigh would pull away for good, winning the set 25-22.

Lehigh would jump ahead early in the third set, taking a 9-5 lead to start things off. Lafayette would battle back to bring the score within one to make it 13-12 off a Tulevech kill but the Mountain Hawks would stretch their lead back to two to make it 17-15. After coming back to tie it up at 18 each, Lafayette would eventually take a 22-21 lead after an attack error by Lehigh.

After the Leopards took the lead, the set would be tied three more times before back-to-back attack errors by the Leopards would give the Mountain Hawks the 26-24 set three victory.
Lehigh would go on to win the fourth set 25-15, winning the match.

With the loss, the Leopards now stand at 13-12 overall and 2-7 in Patriot League action.

They home for their next two matches, welcoming Loyola on Friday and Navy on Saturday for senior day.
