Road Trip Continues at Princeton for Men's Hoops

Leopards look to get back above .500 in Jersey

OPENING TIP
* Lafayette travels to Princeton on Wednesday evening looking to halt a four-game losing streak in the series with their last win coming in the 2014-15 championship campaign. The Leopards took the Tigers to the brink in Easton a year ago, but Devan Cannady's 24 points for the visitors were the difference in an 81-79 defeat.

* The 2019-20 season is the 25th at the helm for head coach Fran O'Hanlon, one of only five coaches direct to direct the same Division I program since the start of the 1995-96 season.

* Senior Myles Cherry is coming off his fourth career double-double and second in as many games this season, averaging 14.0 points and 11.5 rebounds over his first two contests. Cherry is fifth in the nation in field-goal percentage at 85.7 percent from the floor.

* Junior Justin Jaworski has gone 50 straight games with a three-pointer dating back to his freshman season, the second-longest streak in the nation.

LAST TIME OUT
Lafayette put together a furious comeback effort on Saturday afternoon in Brooklyn Heights, N.Y., but it fell just short in the end for the Leopards' first loss of the 2019-20 campaign, a 73-72 defeat to St. Francis Brooklyn.

Lafayette closed both halves of the game strong, leading 37-32 into the halftime intermission and finishing the game on a 16-6 comeback surge. The Leopards had the tying point at the foul line with 2.5 seconds remaining, but, after two makes, junior E.J. Stephens couldn't get the ball up over the rim on the third and the put-back effort wouldn't go.

The free-throw miss was one of the few dark spots on an otherwise excellent outing from Stephens, who came one shy of his career-high with 19 points on 5-of-12 shooting from the field and 7-of-8 from the foul line. Stephens dished out four assists and tied his career-best with three steals on the defensive end.

Despite a tough shooting night from beyond the arc, classmate Justin Jaworski found a way to score inside the circle, tying for the team-high with 19 points on 9-of-17 shooting on the day. Jaworski went 1-of-6 from three-point range to move his streak of consecutive games with a three-point field goal to an even 50, the second-longest streak in the nation.

The other shining Leopard was senior Myles Cherry, who registered his fourth-career double-double and second in as many games this season. Cherry scored 14 points on 5-of-6 from the floor and ripped down 12 rebounds with a team-high +14.

On the other side, Chauncey Hawkins knocked down 10-of-10 from the foul line on his way to 24 points to lead all scorers for the Terriers. Deniz Celen chipped in with 16 as the only other player for the home side with more than seven points.

THE SKINNY ON THE TIGERS
Despite returning four starters from a team that went 16-12 a year ago and 8-6 in Ivy League play, the Tigers have taken their time settling into the 2019-20 campaign, dropping each of their first two contests to sit at 0-2 entering Wednesday's tilt. Princeton has been hurt from the three-point line, allowing 41.7 percent from three-point range for opponents and giving up an average of 88.0 points per contest in a 94-67 loss at Duquesne and an 82-72 defeat at San Francisco. Princeton looks for home court to revive those issues as Wednesday's contest will be the first at home for the Tigers , a team looking for its first win at Jadwin since Feb. 23, a 79-61 defeat of Columbia, who the Leopards defeated in their 2019-20 opener.

Senior Richmond Aririguzoh is the Tigers' lone returning All-Ivy performer, earning second-team honors and all-tournament team laurels a year ago. Aririguzoh tallied 12.1 points and 6.4 rebounds per game a year ago and his 69.3 percent field-goal percentage was the second-best in program history. Jaelin Llewellyn impressed during his rookie campaign last season and has picked up right where he left off, averaging 19.5 points per outing this season. Llewellyn netted 11 points and grabbed five rebounds in an 81-79 win over Lafayette last season. Sophomore Drew Friberg is the other player to watch for the home side, averaging 12.0 points per game over the first two to round out the Tigers' double-figure scorers.

LAST MEETING
Lafayette closed non-league play taking Princeton to the wire on Dec. 21, 2018 at Kirby Sports Center, coming up just short in an 81-79 defeat.

Lafayette, down by as many as 16 with just over 15 minutes to play, never conceded, battling back to within a bucket down the stretch. In the end, the Tigers managed to answer every Leopard bucket with one of their own as Devin Cannady's game-high 24 points were the difference.

Paulius Zalys '19 registered his second straight double-double, leading the Leopards with 20 points and 10 rebounds on the night. Justin Jaworski and Alex Petrie added 19 and 13 points, respectively, as the Leopards went 26-of-63 from the field (41.3%) and 9-of-31 from three-point range (29.0%). Lafayette handled the Tigers on the glass, 41-36, but Princeton committed just three turnovers on the night, owning a 12-0 edge off 11 Leopard giveaways.

CHERRY ON TOP
Senior Myles Cherry has begun his senior season with his best productivity of his career, recording his third and fourth career double-doubles in the opening two games. Cherry scored 14 points in each of the Leopards' games against Columbia and St. Francis Brooklyn and added 11 and 12 rebounds, respectively, in the two contest.

The Newcastle, Australia native sits in the top three in the Patriot League rankings in four different categories, second in rebounding (11.5 rpg), offensive rebounding (3.0 orpg) and field-goal percentage (85.7%) and third in defensive rebounding (8.5 drpg). His field-goal percentage also places him fifth among all NCAA Division I players through two contests.

SPREADING THE WEALTH
Lafayette was one of the deepest teams in the Patriot League in 2018-19 as the only team in the conference possessing 11 players that averaged more than 13 minutes per game. Justin Jaworski (30.8 mpg), Lukas Jarrett (25.5) and EJ Stephens (25.3) were the only Leopards to average more than 25 minutes per outing a year ago.

In the first two games, Lafayette has had eight players average more than 10 minutes and nine different Leopards have found the scoring column.

LET'S GET CHARITABLE

The Leopards, perennially a proficient free-throw shooting team, were once again among the league leaders in free-throw shooting a year ago, sitting third in the Patriot League at a 74.4 percent conversion rate from the line. Justin Jaworski has a lot to do with that number, converting from the charity stripe at an 86.4 percent rate last season, good enough for third in the conference rankings.

To no one's surprise, this year has been no different from the foul line for the Maroon and White, knocking down 83.3 percent of their attempts, good enough for 15th in the country and second in the Patriot League rankings.
