WORCESTER, Mass. – The Lafayette College volleyball team suffered its second sweep of the weekend, falling to Holy Cross in three-straight sets on Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore
Leanna Deegan led the way with 10 kills. Freshman Ellie Carerra-Justiz was right behind her with eight kills.
In the first set of the match, Holy Cross (5-23, (2-12 PL)) would jump out to the early lead, 6-3. A series of kills by the Leopards ((13-16 (2-11 PL)) and attack errors by the Crusaders though would help Lafayette push ahead and take the lead 15-13, looking as if they would run away with the first set victory.
But Holy Cross would tie it up at 23-23 after two back-to-back service errors by the Leopards and from there the two sides would go point for point until they were eventually all tied up at 30. The Crusaders would use a Lafayette attack error to their advantage and they would add a kill of their own to take the first set, 32-30.
Holy Cross would take the next two sets, 25-15 and 25-16. The Leopards would attempt a comeback in the third set, looking to force a fourth, off back-to-back kills from freshman
Grace Steurer and sophomore
Kelly Austin and an attack error by the Crusaders but Holy Cross would respond with an 11-point scoring run to finish off the set and claim the match victory.
The Leopards return home for their final game of the season on Tuesday to battle Army at 7 p.m. Tuesday is also the team's annual faculty and staff appreciation night. They will then hit the road for their final two games of the season, traveling to American and then Navy.
