Women’s Hoops Opens Homestand with Army Defeat

Leopards control the boards, pulling in 53 rebounds the loss

EASTON, Pa. – The Lafayette women's basketball team struggled to find a rhythm on Wednesday night at Kirby Sports Center as Army downed the Leopards, 64-40.

After an opening quarter where Army shot 53 percent, the Leopard defense was able to clean things up, holding the Black Knights to just 3-of-21 from the field in the second period.

The defensive effort continued as Army shot 30 percent the rest of the way however, Lafayette was unable to take advantage of the shooting woes. The Maroon and White shot just 22 percent from the field.

Sophomore Drew Freeland led the way for the Leopards with nine points and three rebounds while classmate Natalie Kucowski matched her career high with 19 rebounds and scored seven points with three assists.

Kate Murray paced Army with a game-high 19 points and five rebounds while Madison Hovren recorded a double-double with 13 points and 18 boards.

Lafayette won the battle on the glass, pulling in 53 rebounds. It was the fifth time in 2018-19 that the Leopards have grabbed 50-plus rebounds in a game after doing so zero times a season ago.

In just her third start of the season, senior Alex Cantwell scored seven points and grabbed seven rebounds with two steals and freshman Nicole Johnson pitched in with four points and a career-high six rebounds.

The Leopards continue their homestand on Saturday, hosting Loyola in the annual Play4Kay Game with tip-off slated for 2 p.m. at Kirby.
