Kucowski’s Big Night Not Enough Against Mids

Cantwell plays 100th game while Kucowski records 100th rejection

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Sophomore Natalie Kucowski matched her career high with 19 rebounds and scored a game-high 17 points, but the Lafayette women's basketball team fell to Navy on Wednesday night, 65-53, at Alumni Hall.

After Lafayette (7-18, 2-12 PL) fell behind, 17-12, after the opening 10 minutes, freshman Jiselle Havas got a steal on the defensive end and Kucowski found her in the corner for the open 3-pointer. It was the first of three unanswered triples by the rookie that sparked a 9-0 Lafayette run to start the second quarter.

Havas matched her career high with three 3-pointers and finished the night with 10 points off the bench and three rebounds.

The Maroon and White defense was also stout to open the second, holding Navy (10-14, 5-9 PL) scoreless for the opening 5:58 of the quarter. However, the Midshipmen hit back-to-back 3-pointers to end the period and head to the locker room up, 27-25.

The back-and-forth continued into the second half as the Mids scored five unanswered to open the third before the Leopards went on an 8-0 run that forced a Navy timeout. The home team would knock down four 3-pointers in the period and go 5-for-5 at the line to take a 52-42 lead into the final frame.

The hot shooting from distance continued as Navy's Mary Kate Ulasewicz hit her third 3-pointer of the night in the early goings of the fourth. She was 3-for-3 from deep on the night while Jennifer Coleman led the Mids with 16 points, 11 rebounds and six assists.

Playing in her 100th career game, senior Alex Cantwell scored seven points with and two rebounds. Kucowski also had two rejections in the game, giving her an even 100 in her Lafayette career.

Navy's eight 3-point field goals were the most they've made in a conference game this season.

The Leopards return home for Senior Day on Saturday when defending Patriot League Champion American makes its way to College Hill with tip-off set for 2 p.m. at Kirby Sports Center.
