FLEMINGTON, N.J. – Freshman
Justin Johnson continued his hot streak at the plate on Tuesday as the Lafayette baseball team dropped its first midweek game of the season to Penn, 19-3, at Diamond Nation.
Â
The Quakers (5-4) struck early and often, plating six runs in the first inning to jump out to an early lead. The Leopards (3-10) began to chip away in the second, when senior
Spencer Rouse doubled to start the inning followed by a freshman
Zach Savage walk and junior
Brandon Posivak free pass.
Â
Johnson would bring home a pair with a two-out base hit and sophomore
Ethan Stern would do the same, singling and scoring Posivak.
Â
Johnson extended his hitting streak to six games with a 3-for-4 effort at the top of the Lafayette lineup with two RBIs. Rouse had a 2-for-3 day with a pair of doubles and a walk to help the attack.
Â
However, the Lafayette offense would struggle as Penn reliever Joe Miller came in to toss 3.1 innings with seven strikeouts and no runs allowed.
Â
The Quaker offense erupted for 18 hits, led by a 4-for-5 day by Josh Hood with a pair of doubles.
Â
Lafayette returns to action when it travels to South Carolina for its spring break tour, beginning with a three-game series at Wofford on Friday evening at 5 p.m.
