SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Lafayette Baseball team got out to a 4-0 lead on Sunday in the series finale at Wofford, but could not hang on, falling 7-6 at King Field.
After three scoreless, the Leopards (3-13) pushed across three in the top half of the fourth when sophomore
Ethan Stern had a leadoff base hit and eventually came around to score on a junior
Mark Glover base hit.
The inning continued when senior
Richard Villa singled to left and both Glover and Villa were sacrificed up a base on a Posivak bunt. The sacrifice paid off when sophomore
Bill Russo had a two-out hit that scored both base runners to jump out to a 3-0 lead over Wofford (14-7).
Stern and Glover each had 3-for-5 days at the plate, as Stern had a double and two runs scored while Glover drove home two RBIs with a run.
The Leopards were able to push their lead to 4-0 before the Terriers plated two in the bottom of the fifth. Lafayette quickly answered with a run in the sixth and the seventh while holding Wofford scoreless in the sixth, but a four-run seventh from the Terriers tied the game at six.
Wofford was able to push one across in the eighth to take and keep the lead. The two through four spots in the Terriers' lineup each collected two hits to lead the charge.
Sophomore
Bill Russo was 1-for-4 with two RBIs while starting pitcher, junior
Brett Kreyer went 5.0 innings, allowing just the two runs on five hits, striking out three.
The Leopards will stay in South Carolina, traveling to South Carolina Upstate on Tuesday with first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m.
