Softball Sweeps St. Peter’s 5-1, 6-3

Gordon strikes out six in game 1; Van Wyk gets game 2 win and adds a pair of hits

EASTON, Pa. – Lafayette swept St. Peter's on Wednesday in non-conference softball action, recording 5-1 and 6-3 victories at Metzgar Fields.

Lafayette cranked out five runs on seven hits in game one, plenty of offense for Leopard starter Stacy Gordon who was in control the entire game and struck out six while scattering three hits.

The Leopards manufactured a run in the first following Natasha Miner's lead-off walk. Paige Grover bunted her to second, and a wild pitch pushed her 60 feet closer. Maddie Wensel plated Miner with a single through the left side for a lead Lafayette did not relinquish.

In the second inning, Ellen McDonnell's double and Addison Goldwait's RBI-single helped the Leopards plate two runs, the second on a well-executed double steal by the duo that scored McDonnell.

In the third, Erin Scott doubled in Maddie Wensel (who also had doubled) as Lafayette stretched the lead to 4-1. As the game moved to the fourth, Kaitlyn Rarick delivered a lead-off double and scored on Miner's lengthy at-bat which led to a sac fly and a 5-1 final.

In game two, Lafayette battled back from a three-run deficit, scoring four runs in the sixth, to notch a 6-3 final.

St. Peter's (4-31) broke out for three runs on three hits in the first inning off Leopard starter Kinzi Van Wyk. The big hit was a Natasha Solano two-run double.

Lafayette pulled within one with a pair of runs in the fourth inning. The Leopards made things happen with two outs in the inning. Scott doubled home Brooke and Maddie Wensel to climb within 3-2.

The Maroon and White seized control of the game with four runs in the sixth inning while sending nine batters to the plate. Scott tied the game, plating a runner from third with a groundout. Malori Pojar and Kinzi Van Wyk each doubled home runs as the Leopards led 5-3.

After a pitching change, Lafayette added two more singles, the second by Addison Goldwait to run the lead to 6-3 through six.

Van Wyk closed out the game in the seventh, battling through a lead-off single and an error before retiring the next three batters to seal the win. Van Wyk struck out four, allowing three runs on five hits over seven innings in the win. Barbara Verrastro took the loss, allowed three earned on nine hits over 5.1 innings.

Lafayette (6-27-1) continues its eight-game home stand on Wednesday, Monmouth in a doubleheader at 3 p.m.
