EASTON, Pa. – The Lafayette volleyball team swept both Delaware State and Siena in three straight sets on Saturday in day two of the Lafayette Invitational, to extend their win streak to five straight matches for the program's first time since 2016.
"We are finally starting to figure out our identity and building upon our consistency slowly from top to bottom, serving and passing, digging and converting," head coach
Ryan Adams said, "It's what we've been working towards and this weekend was one step closer."
Sophomore
Grace Tulevech led the team in both games in kills, totaling 28. In match one, the outside hitter recorded 12 and in match two she recorded a season-high 16, bringing her hitting percentage to .426 on the day. She has now recorded double-digits kills in six straight matches.
The first match of the day saw Lafayette (6-5) battling Delaware State (2-8). The Leopards came out strong in the first set, starting off with a 3-0 scoring run before the Hornets countered with their own to put the score at 3-3. Later in the set, Lafayette would secure the set one victory on a 7-0 scoring run, 25-10.
Set two of the first match was more of a back and forth battle between the two teams with the score being tied six times throughout the set. But the Leopards were able to pull through and win the set, 27-25, after two attack errors by Delaware State. Lafayette then finished off the match with a 25-14 set three victory, sweeping the Hornets. Â
The Leopards second match of the day against Siena (3-5), proved to be more of a battle as the match saw the score tied 25 times throughout three sets. 16 of those ties came in the first set alone with both teams seeming to go point for point. Tied at 26-26, a kill by freshman Ellie Carerra-Justiz and two attack errors by Siena would secure the 28-26 set victory for Lafayette.
The Leopards had more control during the second set, coming out the gates with a 4-0 scoring run, and aided by the Saints attack errors, won 25-21.
The third set once again proved to be a back and forth battle as each team found themselves tied seven times throughout. Tied at 25-25 for the second time in the match, the two sides exchanged kills to bring the score to 26-26. Sophomores
Leanna Deegan and
Madi Wahrmund closed it out for the Leopards, recording back-to-back kills to give the Maroon and White the 28-26 set victory and the 3-0 match win.
Deegan and Carerra-Justiz recorded 23 and 14 total kills on the day, respectively.
The Leopards swept all three matches on the weekend, helping bring their record to 6-5 and marking the first time the program has won five straight sets since 2016 and the first season with more than five wins since 2013.
The Maroon and White are back in action next Saturday as they travel to Hartford, Connecticut to compete in the Hartford Invitational. They are set to face host University of Hartford and Central Connecticut State University on Friday and St. Francis Brooklyn and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore on Saturday. Â
