Men's Soccer Defeats Boston in Patriot League Opener

The Leopards defeat the Terriers for the first time since 2013

EASTON, Pa. – The Lafayette men's soccer team defeated Boston University, 2-1, in their 2019 Patriot League opener Saturday afternoon, securing the programs best start since 2001.

"This team showed great resolve, heart and character and got the win," head coach Dennis Bohn said.

The game started off as a defensive battle, with neither side firing a shot until the 16th minute.

Lafayette (5-1-1, 1-0) would find the back of the net first off a cross from sophomore Andrew Venezia to senior Adam Bramson to give the Leopards the early 1-0 lead in the 33rd-minute of the match and give the Leopards the lead heading into the locker room at the half.

Boston (0-5-1, 0-1) would find a way past to squeeze the ball past sophomore goalkeeper Alex Sutton midway through the second half to equalize the game at 1-1.

With the game looking like it was heading into overtime, freshman Yiannis Panayides, off an assist from Kitromilides, fired one right passed the Terriers goalkeeper to net the golden goal in the 86th-minute. The goal would prove to be the golden goal as each team took one more shot, Lafayette to try to extend their lead and Boston to try to equalize, but neither would be enough as the clock would hit 0 with neither team finding the back of the net again.

The win over Boston University was the first win for the Leopards since 2013 and their first Patriot League opening win since 2017.

Up next for the Maroon and White is a trip back to Philadelphia for a matchup with St. Joseph's on Tuesday. Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m.
