PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Lafayette men's soccer team suffered its second loss of the season on Tuesday, falling to St. Joseph's, 1-2.
St. Joseph's (4-4) came out quick, scoring within the first two minutes of play. Lafayette (5-2-1) wouldn't net the equalizer until the 48
th minute when sophomore
Sebastian Varela netted his fifth goal of the season, off a deflection from a Hawks defender in the box, to tie the game up at 1-1.
But it would be St. Joseph's who would break the tie in the 63
rd minute to give the Hawks the 2-1 victory. Â
The Leopards were led by Varela, who netted one goal on one shot attempt. Patriot League Rookie of the Week, freshman
Yiannis Panayides, took four shots, two of them being on goal and senior
Chris Gomez, senior
Christian Williams and senior
Ryan Goncalves each fired three.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Alex Sutton recorded six saves over the 90 minutes of action.Â
Up next for the Leopards is a conference match up with Holy Cross on Saturday. Kick-off is slated for 3 p.m.
