Men's Soccer Wins Second Straight Conference Match

The Leopards took down Holy Cross in double overtime, 3-2

Worchester, Mass. – The Lafayette men's soccer team defeated Holy Cross in double overtime on Saturday afternoon to win its second straight Patriot League game.

Lafayette (6-2-1, 2-0) struck first in the 16th minute off senior Ryan Goncalves' fourth goal of the season. Holy Cross (0-8, 0-2) would find a way to get the ball past sophomore goalkeeper Alex Sutton early in the second half to make it 1-1. Goncalves was assisted on the goal by senior James Gibson.

After the Crusaders took the lead in the 58th minute, it would be senior Adam Bramson pushing the ball past the goalkeeper off assists by sophomore Marcos Kitromilides. Bramson's second goal of the season would send the game into overtime.

The first 10 minutes of overtime was dominated by the Leopards with them taking the only shots on goal. Neither team was able to find the back of the net, sending the game into a final overtime.

Most of the second overtime went the same way as the first did, with Lafayette taking shot after shot on the Crusaders goal. But it would be Gibson who netted the golden, game-winning goal with less than a minute remaining in the game to give the Leopards the 3-2 victory. The goal was Gibson's second of the season.

Gibson and Bramson both led the way for the Leopards with five shots and one goal each. Sutton totaled four saves.

The win this afternoon pushes the Leopards to two conference wins and six overall, already one more wins than last year in both categories.

The Maroon and White continue conference action on Wednesday when they welcome Army for a 7 p.m. match.
