EASTON, Pa. – The Lafayette men's soccer team rolled to its second consecutive win Tuesday night at Oaks Field as the Leopards edged Fairleigh Dickinson by a 1-0 score and goes 2-0 for the first time since 2010.
Senior
Christian Williams' goal in the 40
th-minute would prove to be the golden one for the Leopards (1-0) as the defender was the only player on either side to find the back of the net. Â
"We knew they were a talented team, they went on the road and beat Bucknell the other day so we know we would have our hands full," head coach
Dennis Bohn said. "But at the end of the match when we had to defend three quarters, we showed some real courage and toughness and got a well-deserved win."
Much of the first half was played in defensive stalemate with all of Lafayette's six shots being deflected by Fairleigh Dickinson's (1-1) defense. The Leopards wasted no time in firing at the Knights goalkeeper with sophomore
Marcos Kitromilides and senior
Ryan Goncalves each taking a shot in the first 10 minutes of the game. The Leopards had another shot to strike first in the 38
th-minute off a corner kick by junior
Andrew Venezia but it was deflected by the Knights defense.
Two minutes later, it clicked for the Leopards as Williams found the back of the net off a header from Venezia, to put the Leopards on the board.
The second half saw both sides taking seven shots apiece but the Leopards defense was able to hold strong and keep the Knights from equalizing.
The standout in the backline for the Leopards would prove to be sophomore goalkeeper
Alex Sutton. Sutton recorded five saves off nine shots and his second shutout of the season.
The Leopards will be back in action on Sept. 7 when they travel to Saint Francis. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
