Women’s Lax Opens McConnell Era with Road Victory

Leopards boast six multi-goal scorers in 18-6 win at Delaware State

DOVER, Del. – The Lafayette women's lacrosse team took just one game to secure head coach Katie McConnell's first win as a Leopard with an 18-6 victory on the road at Delaware State in the 2020 season opener on Saturday afternoon in Dover, Delaware.

Six different Leopards tallied multi-goal performances as the visitors put the Hornets away early and often. Lafayette scored the game's first five goals and led 11-4 at the break on the way to an 18-6 final.

Junior Lizzie O'Brien, who played in just six games over her first two seasons on College Hill, led the Lafayette offense with a career-high four goals, while sophomore Olivia Cunningham also netted a hat trick with three goals and an assist. Seniors Bella Alampi and Katie DeMarino, junior Anna Stein and freshman Katie Chiasson all netted two goals apiece, and junior Colleen Bannon and freshmen Meghan McLachlan and Sarah Bennett rounded out the scoring with one each.

Junior Quinn Lacy didn't have a ton of action in front of her, but did make four saves to pick up her first win of the season. Lacy allowed six goals on 14 shots faced in all 60 minutes of action between the pipes.

Alampi, a co-captain this season, almost out-drew Delaware State on her own in the circle as the senior registered a team-high five draw controls to power a unit that led 18-7 in that aspect. Lafayette held a 10-8 advantage in ground balls, and put up 30 shots compared to just 14 from the visitors with four of those coming in the second half.

The Maroon and White open up their Fisher Stadium slate in their next contest on Saturday, welcoming Merrimack to Easton with opening draw set for 12 p.m.
