Women's Basketball Defeats Navy in OT

Kucowski pulled down 12 boards to record her 1,000 career rebound in the win

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Lafayette Women's Basketball team defeated Navy, 62-59, in overtime on Saturday night in Annapolis for its 11th league win of the season and fourth Patriot League sweep.

Three Leopards found themselves in double-figures, led by junior Drew Freeland with a season-high 22 points. She was followed by senior Alexis Santarelli with 18 points and junior Natalie Kucowski with 15. Kucowski also pulled down 12 boards for her 18th double double of the season.

Kucowski's 12 boards now puts her at 1,000 career rebounds and makes her the first player in Lafayette Women's Basketball program history to record 1,000 career rebounds and 1,000 career points.

Sophomore Jiselle Havas pulled down six rebounds, matching her career-high.

Lafayette (15-12, 11-6 PL) got out to a quick start off a three-pointer from Freeland. Navy (7-21, 2-15 PL)  follow up with a three of its own but the Leopards kept their momentum going, putting themselves up by 14 at the end of the first quarter.

The Maroon and White didn't slow down in the second frame as they continued to pour on the points and headed into the locker room at the half with a 10 point lead.
Navy used a strong third quarter, outscoring Lafayette 18-13 to cut the lead down to five.

The Midshipmen got on the board first in the fourth quarter and cut the Leopards lead down to just one less than three minutes into the frame. Freeland put in another three-pointer to bring the Leopards lead back out to four but Navy came back to tie up the game, 48-48, under the five minute mark.

The two squads battled back and forth until sophomore Nicole Johnson put in two and Kucowski made an extra point to put the Leopards up by three. But a three-pointer by Navy with one second left on the clock sent the game into overtime.

Johnson was fouled less than a minute into overtime to send herself to the line. She made both her extra shots to put the Leopards up by two but a three-pointer by Navy put the Midshipmen back in the lead.

Freeland tied up the game with a jumper and that was all the Leopards needed to get their momentum back as Kucowski and Johnson both added a two points to put the Leopards up by five. Navy got the final bucket of the game in but it wasn't enough for the Midshipmen as the Leopards were able to hang on for the win.

The win marks the most conference wins the program has had since 1991-92 and marks the teams second overtime win this season.

Lafayette will play one more regular season game on Wednesday night at home against Bucknell.  Wednesday is senior night and the teams three seniors, Sarah Agnello, Alexis Santarelli and Tasha Vipond will be honored before the game.
