Baseball's Comeback Falls Short

The Leopards drop to 3-7

DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Lafayette College baseball team dropped its final game of the weekend to Davidson, 7-5.

The Leopards were led by junior Colin Hartey who went 2-for-4 from the plate. Junior Bill Russo drove in three of the Leopards runs, going 1-for-4 at the plate and freshman Patrick Vandenbergh went 1-for-3 from the plate, driving in the Leopards other two runs of the afternoon.

Senior Brett Kreyer went 5.2 innings, striking out five. Senior Mark Anderson came in to pitch 2.1 innings of relief, striking out three.

After five scoreless innings from both sides, Davidson (9-2) got on the board first in the bottom of the sixth with a two-run home run. The Wildcats quickly added another two runs in the same inning off another two-run home run to bring the score to 4-0 heading into the seventh inning.

Lafayette (3-7) started to produce runs in the top of the seventh after junior Colin Hartey started off the inning with a single to left field. Junior Ethan Stern was then hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second.

Senior Trey Durrah reached base on a fielder's choice, advancing the other two runners and loading the bases. Sophomore Bill Russo hit a sacrifice fly, bringing home Hartey to make it 4-1. Durrah and Stern then both crossed home off a Vandenbergh single to cut the Wildcats lead to one.

Davidson added three more in the bottom of the seventh to make it 7-3.

The eighth inning looked promising for the Leopards after Hartey started off the inning with another single. Stern then drew a walk to put runners on first and second with no outs. Two batters later, senior Mark Glover was hit by a pitch to load the bases with one out for junior Bill Russo.

Russo singled, scoring both Stern and Hartey to bring the score to 7-5, cutting the Wildcats lead down to two.

Vandenbergh drew a walk to load the bases again but the Leopards bats couldn't connect to bring any more runners home, keeping the score 7-5.

The Maroon and White threatened in the top of the ninth, bringing the tying run to the plate but Davidson shut down the Leopards bats to hang on for the series win.

The Leopards will head to Teaneck, New Jersey on Tuesday for a midweek game with Fairleigh Dickinson University. They will then go to Maryland for a three-game weekend series with Towson University.
