FAIRFAX, Va. -- Delaware broke out for five runs in the fifth inning to pull away to a 9-1 final in the Leopards' last game of the Patriot Classic on Sunday afternoon at the George Mason Softball Complex.
Delaware took the early advantage, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first. Brittany Mendoza doubled home a run and later scored on a first-and-third steal play.
The teams traded runs in the third inning. With

Julia Romano doubled her home from first base to cut the deficit to 2-1. Delaware scored its run on a sac fly.
Delaware (13-4) put away the game with five in the fifth. Karolina Flores and Chayanna Gallardo each doubled in two during the rally.
Hannah Cook was the pitcher of record for Lafayette, allowing six earned runs on six hits. Sarah Piening (5-0) gave up one unearned run on four hits while striking out six in the win.
Lafayette next plays on Wednesday, traveling to Penn for a doubleheader at 3 p.m.
