No. 19 Harvard Tops Leopards in Non-League Tune-up

Shaeffer and Forney each pick off a pass; Olivas racks up 15 tackles

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. –  Lafayette wrapped up the non-conference portion of its schedule with a 30-3 loss to No. 19 Harvard on Saturday afternoon at Harvard Stadium.

The hosts controlled the tempo with a stout running game, as Aidan Bourguet totaled 22 carries for 169 yards and two touchdowns. The Leopards' offense committed four turnovers on the afternoon which resulted in 10 Harvard points.

Defensively, linebackers Billy Shaeffer and Preston Forney each picked off passes for Lafayette while fellow linebacker Marco Olivas led the team with a game-high 15 tackles, coming off a 16-tackle performance last week vs. Bucknell.

On the hosts' first drive, Bourguet broke out for a 44-yard run off tackle on the first play from scrimmage and then added a 17-yard run. The fifth play of the drive was a two-yard rush for the TD, as Harvard took a lead it would not relinquish.

Lafayette moved the ball on its second drive of the fourth quarter. On 3rd-and-10 at the Lafayette 46, freshman QB Ah-Shaun Davis completed a 15-yard strike to Joe Gillette for a first down. The Leopards had the ball 4th-and-6 at the Harvard 35-yard line. Out of a timeout, the Maroon and White elected to go for it. Davis' pass up the visitor sideline to Jordan Hull was well defended and Lafayette turned it over on downs.

Harvard's resulting drive stalled when Shaeffer sacked quarterback Charlie Dean and forced a fumble. Harvard recovered and settled for a 38-yard field goal from Jonah Lipel and a 10-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Just into the second quarter, the Leopards came up with the first turnover of the game. Forney picked off a Dean offering at the Lafayette 45-yard line. The Leopards took advantage of his first career pick, using eight plays to go 49 yards while ending with a 33-yard field goal by Micah Pettit.

Harvard fumbled its way into the end zone for its next score. Dean dropped the snap on a QB sneak, but Bourguet was there to scoop it up and score, as Harvard led 17-3 with 5:40 left in the half.

Lafayette had the ball near midfield with less than two minutes left in the half and saw Harvard bring the pressure to Davis. Davis' pass was tipped by the linebacker and was picked off by Alex Washington with 1:37 left in the half. On the day, Harvard sacked Davis seven times.

Harvard added a last-minute field goal, set up by a 47-yard run by Bourguet, for the 20-3 margin at halftime.

When the second half opened, a fumbled kickoff by the Leopards led to another Harvard field goal. Three minutes later, a third Leopard turnover, this time an interception, fueled Harvard's next score. Sone Ntoh punched in a nine-yard TD with 10 minutes left in the third quarter to run the score and the final to 30-3.

It's all Patriot League play the rest of the way for Lafayette. The Leopards will have Oct. 23 off from competition before traveling to Georgetown on Oct. 30.

NOTES:
The Leopards changed up their helmet scheme for their final non-conference game, wearing a Leopard head logo on one side and the individual uniform number on the obverse.

Leopard alums Pat Creahan '14, Pat Crosby '14 and Dave Nelson '06 were in attendance on Saturday afternoon for the Leopards first trip to Cambridge since 2017.

Lafayette was held without a touchdown for the second time (William and Mary) this season.
