EASTON, Pa.- The Lafayette field hockey team dominated Colgate on Saturday for their second conference victory of the season. Two Leopards scored multiple goals against the Raiders for a final score of 5-1 during homecoming weekend. The team is now 7-2 overall and 2-1 in the Patriot League.
"The team created a lot of attacking opportunities, especially with Felicitas able to get three goals and two for Alix is fantastic," said head coach
Jennifer Stone. "It's a great output from our striker line to see them scoring on some pressured situations, such as a stroke. Across the board, I'm really pleased with the win and am looking forward to tomorrow."
Senior captain
Audrey Sawers and freshman
Lineke Spaans took advantage of a fast break and were able to get the ball to senior
Alix Talkow for a tipped goal at 9:02 in the first quarter.
At 23:35,
Felicitas Hannes easily put the ball in the back of the net on a penalty stroke for Lafayette's second goal. Ten minutes later, Hannes scored again off a strong penalty corner tip. Junior
Simone Hefting and sophomore
Ariel Schumacher are credited as the castle assisting her.
Lafayette had great focus on the ball today and created multiple steady passing sequences throughout their midfield and offensive line. The Leopards held the advantage in both corners (8-2) and shots (25-5). The defense was calm and collected, shifting against Colgate's press to get the ball out of the backfield.
Colgate managed to tally their only goal off of their own fast break at 40:25; Rachel Alderfer was assisted by Taylor Casamassa and Sarah Killcommons.
At 48:32, Hannes completed her hat trick after taking the game's second penalty stroke. Both of Hannes' strokes were rockets to the lower left corners, just out of reach of Colgate's goalkeeper, Anna Unger.
For the final Lafayette goal, Talkow was able to convert a long pass into the circle from Sawers for her second goal of the match.
Lafayette goalkeeper
Hailey Abbott is credited with one save in the victory, while her Colgate counterpart, Unger, made eight.
The Leopards play Fairfield tomorrow at 2 p.m. for the third day of homecoming weekend in Easton.
