Field Hockey Remains Undefeated at Home

Leopards fight for 2-1 victory against the Stags

EASTON, Pa.- The Lafayette field hockey team won their second match in a row during homecoming weekend against Fairfield, 2-1. While there were some key errors made during the first half, the Leopards rallied for the third and fourth quarter to stay undefeated on Rappolt Field. The team improves to an overall record of 8-2 (2-1 PL).

"We had to prepare physically; it takes a toll on the body to play back to back games," said head coach Jennifer Stone. "They put a lot of miles out there, but I think they managed it well. Fairfield is a great team and there are a lot of takeaways we can bring to our group for next weekend."

Lafayette got on the board quickly with a goal from sophomore midfielder Ariel Schumacher in the first quarter (8:25). She was able to tip in a corner shot coming from junior Simone Hefting.

Fairfield struck back to tie the game at 11:37, when Malen Iglesias scored unassisted.

The next two quarters would remain scoreless, but each team was relentless in their efforts. Both teams had multiple cards throughout the game.

Lafayette held the advantage in total shots (15-7), but Fairfield was able to create one more penalty corner opportunity (5-6).

At 49:01 in the fourth quarter, senior captain Audrey Sawers converted a penalty corner shot, assisted by Hefting and freshman Filine Gerbranij. Hefting's castle was given the insert and gave Sawers a behind the back pass to confuse Fairfield's flyer for a hard sweep to the bottom right corner.

Lafayette's senior goalkeeper Hailey Abbott made two saves in the victory, where her Fairfield counterpart Zoe Rosen made six. The Leopards' defensive unit steadied themselves to be able to hold the ball in the corner of the field until time ran out to secure the win.

"As for the season so far, this group is great," said Jennifer Stone. "They are so fun to coach and I feel fortunate to be able to work with them each day."

The Leopards travel to Boston on Saturday to face the Terriers at noon.
