The Rivalry Ends in Defeat for Field Hockey

Leopards 2, Mountain Hawks 3 in OT1

BETHLEHEM, Pa.- The Lafayette field hockey team traveled to Lehigh for a Friday night contest, ending with a loss to the Mountain Hawks 3-2 in the first overtime period. The Leopards are now 11-4 overall and 3-2 in Patriot League play.

Both teams will compete in the Patriot League tournament from Nov. 4-6th after completing strong seasons just 14 miles away from each other. Lafayette still leads the all-time series, 41-15-3.

The first quarter saw few scoring opportunities, as both teams combined had only five shots total.

Zero shots were taken in the second quarter until senior Molly McAndrew earned a penalty corner for the Maroon and White. A deceptive pass left from senior Audrey Sawers at the top was slammed into the lower backboard by her classmate Felicitas Hannes at 24:33 to give the Leopards the lead.

It wasn't long until Lehigh's Drew Pecora scored the equalizer off a corner of their own just four minutes later.

Sawers made a drive into the circle during the third quarter, giving a backhanded pass towards goal that resulted in a bit of pinball around the Lehigh goalkeeper. McAndrew was able to convert it at 34:40 after getting a touch on the ball.

Lehigh's second goal came off of a corner tip by Sydney White at 37:45.

It remained tied at 2-2 going into the first overtime period on Ulrich Field under the lights. Lehigh's Pecora quickly got a hard shot on goal that was kicked away by Lafayette's Hailey Abbott to keep the Maroon and White alive.

Freshman Lineke Spaans and McAndrew had a nice opportunity in the circle with just about one minute left in OT1 before the Mountain Hawks could draw a penalty stroke. It was converted by Lenke Havas to win the game at 69:20.

Lehigh held the advantage in total shots (19-11), as well as penalty corners (11-5). Lafayette's senior goalkeeper Hailey Abbott made seven saves in the defeat, while her Lehigh counterpart, Maddie Kahn, made three.

The Leopards stay on the road this Sunday, facing Temple at 1 p.m. in Philadelphia, Pa.
