Back-to-Back Goals Propel the Leopards to Victory on Senior Day

Melissa Lamanna scores her fifth goal of the season

EASTON, Pa. - The Lafayette women's soccer team outlasted the Raiders of Colgate University on Senior Day to win its third straight match 2-1 on Saturday at Mike Bourger '44 Field at Oaks Stadium. Before the match, the five members of the Lafayette women's soccer class of 2022 were honored.

Colgate entered the scoring column first, when in the 25th minute a beautiful touch pass by Hannah Pinkus connected with Ally Giovino directly in front of the goal, who sent her shot past Lafayette junior goalkeeper Lindsay Dewar

In the 79th minute, Lafayette equalized the match.  After a Lafayette corner kick, the ball ricocheted off several players and finally was headed into the goal by junior Melissa Lamanna, giving her a team-high fifth goal of the season.

Just two minutes later, in the 81st minute, coming off of another Lafayette corner, the ball ping-ponged between several Leopards and was headed into the goal by senior Riley Dowd, for her second goal of the year.

Colgate nearly tied the match in the 88th minute when a header off of a corner kick got by Lafayette goalkeeper Natalie Neumann and into the goal.  However, after discussion by the referees, Colgate was deemed to be offsides and the goal was nullified.

The Leopards finished the afternoon with a total of six shots and Colgate had seven.  Both Lafayette and Colgate recorded four shots on goal each. Melissa Lamanna and Riley Dowd had one shot a piece, both of which resulted in goals.  Gretchen Waechter, Katie Butler, Haley Pursel and Michaela Silvati all had one shot, with the shots by Waechter and Butler being on goal.

Lafayette goalkeeper Lindsay Dewar started the match in the net, and had one save.  Natalie Neumann came in for the second-half, where she had two saves and was credited with the win.

The Leopards will finish the regular season when they travel to Annapolis Md. to battle the Midshipmen of Navy in a mid-week contest on Wednesday, October 27th at Glenn Warner Soccer Facility.
