Leopards Pull Out Five Set Victory at Loyola

Weston records 40 digs while Deegan has a double-double

BALTIMORE – The Lafayette College volleyball team completed the season sweep of Loyola in thrilling fashion, knocking off the Greyhounds in five sets (22-25, 25-23, 17-25, 25-22, 15-12) to match the program record for most Patriot League wins in a season.

Senior Leanna Deegan recorded a double-double with 20 kills and 15 digs while sophomore Katie Weston had 40 digs, tied for fifth-most in the nation in a single match this season.

For the first time in conference play and just third time all season, the Leopards went the distance and improved their record in five-set matches to 2-1.

Loyola got off to a fast start and scored five of the set's final eight points. The Leopards responded after finding themselves down, 15-10 in the second, scoring three-straight and eventually tying the set at 17.

Freshman Abby Neiporte put down one of her nine kills to take the lead to help Lafayette eventually tie the match.

The teams continued their back-and-forth with Loyola taking the third before the Leopards forced a fifth set.

After the Greyhounds scored the first point, Lafayette rattled off five in-a-row that included three Deegan kills to take momentum in the fifth. Loyola did not go away, getting within one at 12-11 after a 3-0 Greyhound run before Nieporte ended that with a kill and Deegan put down back-to-back kills to clinch the match.

Senior Grace Tulevech had 10 kills and classmate Madi Wahrmund had nine, hitting .320 with a pair of blocks. Sophomore Alyssa Vitale had 43 assists while junior Grace Steurer had 15 digs.

Lafayette makes a quick turnaround, traveling to the Capitol to take on American Saturday at 4 p.m.
