Second half goals by Lombard, Venezia gave Lafayette the comeback draw

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Lafayette College men's soccer team battled to a 2-2 double overtime draw with Holy Cross, in come-from-behind fashion, on Saturday afternoon in Worcester, Massachusetts.

Junior Hale Lombard also recorded a goal for the Maroon and White, marking his fifth of the season. He also totaled a team-leading five shots along with senior Marcos Kitromilides.

Holy Cross (8-6-3, 5-2-1 PL) was the first to strike in the 33rd minute to go up 1-0. The Crusaders followed up five minutes later with a second goal to bring the score to 2-0, in favor of the home team.

Lafayette (7-7-3, 3-3-2 PL) fired off five shots, with only one on goal through the first 45 minutes of regulation, but couldn't find the back of the net as the game headed into halftime with the home team up by two.

The Leopards came out strong right from the start of the second half firing off five shots before Lombard was the first Leopards of the afternoon to find the back of the net in the 72nd minute, assisted by Venezia, to put the Leopards on the board.

Three minutes later, in the 75th minute, it was Venezia who had a goal of his own to tie the game up 2-2.

Kitromilides had a chance to win the game for the Maroon and White in the 86th minute off a shot to the lower left corner of the goal, but the Crusaders goalkeeper was there to make the save, sending the game into overtime.

Neither side could find the back of the net through two 10 minute overtime periods. The Leopards had two chances to come to Easton with the win in the final seconds of the second overtime period, off shots by Venezia and junior Benji Grossi, but neither could tally the goal as the game ended in a 2-2 draw.

The Leopards outshot the Crusaders 24-8 holding them to just two shots in the second half, no shots in the first overtime period, and just one shot in the second overtime period.
