DURHAM, N.C.  – No. 7 Duke's depth became too much for the Lafayette College men's basketball team Friday night at Cameron Indoor Stadium, pulling away in the second half after to 88-55 victory.
Â
"I thought we competed very well for the first 24 or 25 minutes, and we had a chance to get it to four with a couple foul shots, but we didn't get it done," said head coach Fran O'Hanlon. "And then they went on a huge spurt, and we lost our poise a bit. That is a terrific team."
Â
It was an eight-point game at the break after the Leopards defense held Duke to just a 4-of-16 from 3-point range and 33% from the field in the opening 20 minutes.
Â
Sophomore
Kyle Jenkins scored a season-best 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting with four rebounds, including four 3-pointers and had the hot-hand early for the Maroon and White, scoring 15 first-half points.
Â
Lafayette opened up an 8-0 outburst at the 6:22 mark in the first to cut the Duke lead to single digits behind 3-pointers by freshman
CJ Fulton and Jenkins, followed by a Jenkins jump shot to make it 23-15.
Â
The Maroon and White outscored the Blue Devils, 10-5, over the final 2:46 of the first half.
Â
Out of the break, junior
Leo O'Boyle and senior
Tyrone Perry got into the mix as O'Boyle knocked down a jumper and Perry made a layup to open scoring before Duke was able to stretch its lead to 14 over the next two minutes.
Â
A 9-0 Duke run took away all of Lafayette's momentum at the 13:02 mark to take control on its home court.
Â
Perry finished with nine point and four rebounds while Fulton scored a season-best seven points with five boards. Quinn stuffed the stat sheet with seven rebounds, four points and four assists.
Â
The road trip makes a stop in New Jersey as the Leopards face Rutgers Monday night at 7 p.m. on Big Ten Network Plus.
