Jenkins' Go-Ahead Three Gives Leopards Win Over Rutgers

First win of the season for Lafayette comes in B1G fashion

PISCATAWAY, N.J.  – Sophomore Kyle Jenkins drained a 3-pointer from the right wing with 2.1 seconds left to give the Lafayette College men's basketball team its first win of the season, defeating Rutgers 53-51 Monday night at Jersey Mike's Arena.

"It's awesome. To come in here, when we haven't been winning. That team down in Carolina (Duke) gave us a lesson the other day, but they're probably going to give a lot of people lessons. Just a great win for us," said head coach Fran O'Hanlon. "That says a lot about our team. We needed a win. Our schedule has been the schedule from hell here, these first six games, five of them on the road. At yesterday's practice, I could tell, our guys are exhausted from playing so many games and traveling. We got it together today and we really had a great showing."

Rutgers used a 12-2 run late in the first half to go up by seven points with 3:50 left before the Leopards closed the half on a 7-2 run, capped off by a junior Leo O'Boyle 3-pointer to make it a one-point game at the break.

Junior Neal Quinn scored to start the second half and O'Boyle hit a pair of free throws to give Lafayette a 32-30 lead in the early goings.

After being held scoreless in the first half, Jenkins gave Lafayette a 34-32 lead heading into the first media timeout of the second. Rutgers converted a triple out of the timeout before Lafayette went on an 8-0 run between O'Boyle and sophomore Jon Brantley to give the Maroon and White its largest lead of the season at 42-35.

The Scarlet Knights outscored Lafayette 10-2 over the next five minutes to take a one-point lead before Quinn and O'Boyle made back-to-back layups to make it 48-45.

After a pair of Rutgers free throws made it a one-point game once more, freshman CJ Fulton converted the back-door layup on a feed from Quinn to extend it to three points again. Rutgers scored four unanswered, including a transition 3-pointer with 30 seconds left to take a one-point lead.

The Leopards called timeout and after the first option wasn't there, Jenkins caught and shoot on the right wing to go in front.

Jenkins finished with five points and eight rebounds while O'Boyle led all scorers with 18 points and four boards, including the Leopards' first six in the game. Quinn was also in double-figures with 12 points, eight rebounds and five assists.

Lafayette held the home team to just 28% shooting from the field and 4-of-26 from beyond the arc.

The win marks the Leopards' first win over a Power-Five opponent since 2011 when they defeated Penn State.
