Leopards Set School Record for PL Wins with Sweep of Lehigh

Nieporte with 15 kills to lead the way and Gibson has seven blocks

EASTON, Pa. – The Lafayette College volleyball team swept Lehigh (25-12, 25-23, 25-21) inside Kirby Sports Center to set the program record for Patriot League wins in a season with 10.

Freshman Abby Nieporte put down a season-best 15 kills while senior Madi Wahrmund hit .571 with nine. Sophomore Gracie Gibson managed a season-high seven blocks to help the Leopards complete the season sweep of Lehigh.

Lafayette got off to a fast start, hitting .310 in the opening set while holding the Mountain Hawks in the negatives at -.062.

The Maroon and White closed the first set on a 7-0 run with sophomore Katie Weston at the service line that included back-to-back kills by Wahrmund to end the set and an ace by Weston, one of her three in the match.

Lehigh did not go away, scoring 3-out-of-4 points heading into the media timeout to hold a slight advantage, 15-13. The Mountain Hawks used a 5-0 run late in the set to take a big advantage, 23-20, before Lafayette rattled off five-straight to capture the set.

Again, Lehigh took a lead into the media timeout of the third before Gibson was a part of two huge blocks down the stretch to help the Leopards regain momentum. Wahrmund put down a massive kill off of a free ball to make it 22-19.

Nieporte had a pair of big kills down the stretch and senior Grace Tulevech put down the finisher. Tulevech had seven kills, hitting .300 with four blocks.

Sophomore Alyssa Vitale had 34 assists while Weston had 17 digs. Freshman Phoebe Glass came off the bench to put down a season-best six kills.

The Leopards are right back to it, hosting Bucknell in Kirby Sports Center on Sunday with first serve scheduled for 2 p.m.
