BALTIMORE, MD. – The Lafayette College women's basketball team defeated UMBC, 62-55, on Thursday to earn its third-straight win and first road win of the season.

The win also marked Lafayette's first-ever program win over UMBC. Â

Lafayette was led by sophomore
Makayla Andrews who totaled 19 points and freshman
Abby Antognoli who recorded a career-high 16. Senior
Makaila Wilson led the way in rebounds with 11 and junior
Jessica Booth led the team in assists (6) and steals (3). Â

UMBC (1-7, 0-0 American East) got on the board first less than a minute into the game but Andrews responded with a shot from beyond the arc to give Lafayette (4-5, 0-0 PL) the lead 3-2.

The two sides traded the lead before UMBC jumped out to a 7-5 lead with 5:59 left in the quarter. The Leopards stormed back with 6-0 run to take a 12-9 lead before UMBC broke the run with 2:59 left to play, eventually pulling the score to 16-15 to close out the quarter.

Andrews opened up the second quarter with a layup to push the Leopards' lead out to 18-15. The Retrievers responded with a 7-0 to take the lead 22-18. Â

Antognoli broke the Retrievers run with a layup to pull Lafayette back within two before the home team countered with a three-point shot to put themselves back up by five, 25-20. Senior
Nicole Johnson put in a shot from beyond the arc and Andrews put in a layup to tie up the game.

Both sides put in two more points each to send the game into halftime with the score tied at 27.

Wilson broke the tie right at the start of the third quarter to put Lafayette up by two, but UMBC responded with a three-pointer to go up by one. Then Wilson, once again, broke the tie to put the Leopards back in the lead by one, 31-30.

Andrews made a jumper to put Lafayette in the lead by three. UMBC pulled the score back within one, 33-32, but the Leopards eventually pulled away from the Retrievers to take a 43-36 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

UMBC tried to mount a comeback at the start of the final quarter, pulling within five with 7:58 left to play. Andrews responded with a three-pointer for the Maroon and White to put Lafayette back on top by eight.

The Retrievers battled back within four, 56-52, with 3:05 left to play in the game but the Leopards were able to hold on and earn the Thursday night win in Baltimore 62-55.

UMBC was led by three Retrievers with double-digit points: Danae Marquez (18), Janee'a Summers (17) and Onome-Juliet Esadah (10).

The Leopards will stay on the road and are slated to head to Fordham on Sunday for a 2 p.m. game.
