Wagner Tops Leopard Softball in Season-Opening Doubleheader

Roman goes 2-for-2 with three RBI in game two

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.. – Lafayette softball opened its 2021 season on Sunday at Wagner, losing 11-0 and 12-4 in non-conference action.
 
The Leopards were held to two hits in the first game by Wagner starter Eve Harvey. Natasha Miner did her job in the lead-off role for the Leopards, reaching on a walk and stealing second in the first inning while also connecting for a two-out double in the third inning. Cleanup hitter Morgan Olynyk had a double in the fourth for the other Leopard hit.
 
Wagner (4-0) scored three in the first, three in the second, two in the third and three more in the fourth inning to capture the win. Five different players drove in runs with three of them plating two runs apiece.
 
Leopard starter Kinzi van Wyk allowed eight runs (five earned) on four hits over 2.2 innings in the loss. Harvey struck out two and walked one in four innings.
 
 
In game two, the Seahawks used a five-run third inning to pull away for the 12-4 final.
 
The Leopards (0-2) knotted things at 1-1 in the top of the second. Paige Grover led off with a single and later scored on Julia Roman's one-out hit to left. Lafayette then added three more runs to take its first lead of the day. Olynyk doubled home Miner, and Roman plated two more with her second hit of the day. The Leopards led 4-1.
 
Wagner answered with five runs on five hits in the bottom half of the frame, batting around the order to lead 6-4. The hosts broke open the game with three runs in the fourth, scoring a pair of Keaghan Ward's single. Wagner put the game away in the home half of the fifth with Amelia Van Orman accounting for two of the runs with her center field single with a pair of runners in scoring position.
 
Kailee Sawai made her collegiate debut in the circle, allowing 11 runs on 15 hits with a pair of strikeouts.
 
Lafayette returns to action on March 21, hosting Drexel in a doubleheader at noon.
