Drexel Takes a Pair From Leopard Softball

Leopards will turn their attention to Patriot League play

EASTON, Pa. – Lafayette softball dropped both halves of its home-opening doubleheader on Sunday afternoon, losing each game 11-2.

In game one, Drexel led wire-to-wire, scoring two in the first, four in the second and five in the third en route to an 11-2 final.

Sarah Clinton gave the Dragons the early lead with a two-run home run to straightaway center field. In the second inning, Leopard starter Kinzi Van Wyk hit the first three batters, allowing the Dragons to score four runs, including two on a Linda Rush double.

Lafayette answered with two in the bottom half of the second. The Leopards loaded the bases following a lead-off single by Grace Harvey, a Paige Grover walk and a Julia Roman infield hit. Van Wyk ripped a ball up the middle. The shortstop made the force out at second while Harvey scored but overthrew the bag at first base, looking for a double play, which allowed Grover to come plateward.

Leading 6-2, the visitors broke open the game with five runs in the third inning, three via a two-out home run from Rush who finished the game with five RBI.

Van Wyk took the loss, allowing eight runs on seven hits over 2.1 innings. Bailey Langford came on in relief, giving up three runs on three hits in the final 2.2 innings. Lindsay Nelson (1 ER, 3H) was the circle winner.

Game two went the distance before Drexel broke it open with a five-run seventh inning. Lafayette led for more than half of the game, taking a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Grover (2-for-3) doubled and scored on Roman's single through the right side. Langford (2-for-3) then plated Roman for the 2-0 advantage.

In the top of the fourth. Drexel's Kristi DiMeo lifted Kailee Sawai's 2-2 offering over the fence in left field. An inning later Drexel took its first lead of the game, 3-2, on Rush's second home run of the afternoon.

Things got away from the Leopards in the sixth inning, as Drexel scored a pair of unearned runs on Alexis Rosenberry's single through the left side to lead 6-2. The Dragons added five in the top of the seventh to run the final to 11-2.

Sawai took the loss, giving up seven earned runs on 10 hits over 6.1 innings. Brookyln Daly scattered six hits and struck out 10 while allowing a pair of Leopard runs for the win.

Lafayette opens Patriot League play next weekend, traveling to Bucknell on Saturday before hosting Bucknell in a Sunday doubleheader. Play on both days begins at 1 p.m.
