Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Field Hockey falls to Bucknell on road

Sawers, Hamilton score goals in loss

LEWISBURG, Pa. — The Lafayette field hockey team scored two goals in the first half, lost the lead in the third period, and had a chance to tie the game on a penalty stroke with three seconds left, but they could not pull out a victory over Bucknell as the Bison won, 3-2, on Sunday afternoon.

The loss put the Leopards at 1-4 in the Patriot League and kept them in sixth in the conference standings with five points. The Leopards, who are trying to make the Patriot League Tournament for the third consecutive season, currently trail both Lehigh and Colgate by one point for the last spot in the four-team conference tournament. American is in first place with 10 points, while Bucknell and Boston U. are tied for second with nine points after Bucknell picked up its third win of the season.

The Leopards jumped out to a 1-0 lead 6:27 into the first period after sophomore Tara Hamilton scored her second goal of the season on a scramble in front of the cage. The lead was short-lived, as Bucknell put in the equalizer four minutes later during a penalty corner.

In the second period, the Maroon and White got back on top, 2-1, with 5:54 left in the half after senior Audrey Sawers fired a shot into the cage off an assist from fellow classmate Anna Steps during a penalty corner. The Leopards would take that advantage into halftime.

In the second half,  the Leopards yielded two goals about a minute apart from each other midway through the third period to allow Bucknell to take a 3-2 lead. The first goal came on a deflection in front of the cage, while the second occurred off a penalty corner.

In the final period, the Leopards tried to put together one last rally. They outshot the Bison, 5-3, with junior Alix Talkow taking two shots, and junior Molly McAndrew, senior Grace Angelella, and Hamilton each taking one. The second shot by Talkow was saved, but Bucknell committed a foul on the play, resulting in a penalty stroke attempt for the Leopards.

Unfortunately, the Leopards could not convert the penalty stroke, as it was saved by Bucknell goalie Clara McCormick, resulting in the Bison running out the clock for the victory.

Despite the loss, the Leopards received a solid effort from freshman Emma Garvey in goal, as she had a career-high six saves, including two late in the fourth period that kept the Leopards in the game.

The Leopards will close out the regular season on the road next Sunday when they travel to Washington, D.C. to face American for a 2 p.m. clash.
