HAMILTON, N.Y. – Lafayette used a strong pitching performance and timely hitting to capture a 2-0 win over Colgate in the second game of a Friday doubleheader.
Freshman
Kailee Sawai limited Colgate to just four hits en route to her first collegiate victory and shutout. She threw all seven innings, striking out one and walking one while allowing just two Colgate runners to reach scoring position.
Lafayette scored all of the runs it would need in the fourth.
Morgan Olynyk led off with a single. Gracy Harvey sacrificed her to second and
Paige Grover (2-for-3) did the rest. The senior ripped a double to left for the 1-0 lead.
The Leopards doubled their advantage in the fifth inning.
Paige Sandidge's two-out double kept the inning alive and
Natasha Miner (2-for-4) came through with an infield single for the 2-0 lead that held through the end of the game.
In the series opener, Colgate led from start to finish, scoring five runs over the first three innings en route to a 9-1 final in five innings.
Morgan. Farrah used a double in the first and a solo home run in the second to spark the Colgate offense against Leopard starter
Kinzi Van Wyk.
The Leopards scored their only run of the contest in the top of the third. Lafayette took advantage of a Colgate error that allowed
Julia Romano to reach with two outs. Consecutive singles by Olynyk and Harvey (2-for-2) scored Romano.
Colgate closed out the game with three runs in the fourth following Kara Fusco's three-run home run off Lafayette reliever
Kaili Reitano in her first appearance.
