Leopards Close Season with Hard-Fought Loss to No. 12/13 Navy

Dutton, Mathes, Cunniffe net two each in 14-10 defeat

EASTON, Pa. - The Lafayette men's lacrosse team closed out its 2021 campaign on Saturday afternoon at Fisher Stadium, playing to the final whistle with No. 12/13 Navy in a hard-fought 14-10 defeat.

The contest proved to be the final time the Leopards' five-member senior class would don the Maroon and White as co-captain Bryan Hess, Gabe Smithline, Jake Floyd-Jones, Andrew Robbins and John Natoli were honored prior to the game for Senior Day. Navy moves on the the Patriot League Tournament as the No. 3 seed, battling Loyola on Tuesday in the quarterfinals.

The second quarter was the difference on Saturday as the Leopards jumped out on the front foot and played the Mids even through the first 15 minutes at 4-4. But the biggest momentum swing of the game began at the 11:04 point of the second as a string of six straight Navy tallies took the contest into the break with the visitors up five, 10-5.

The Maroon and White clawed their way back in it, though, winning the second half by a 5-4 margin. Neither side scored for an almost 12-minute stretch in the final period as the Mids were able to see out the clock on the win.

Junior Cole Dutton recorded his second multiple-goal game of the season, joining Charlie Cunniffe and John Mathes as the Leopards' multi-goal performers with two each. Kalman Kraham added a score and an assist as the other member of the multi-point club.

Junior Ryan Ness made eight saves between the pipes, with five coming in the opening 30 minutes. Tommy McGee was the best of the defensive trio, adding two caused turnovers and a ground ball on the afternoon.

Shots finished at 41-34 in favor of the Mids and Navy picked up 37 of the game's 61 groundballs. Both sides failed to convert on an extra-man opportunity, but neither failed a clear. At the X, Aidan Kelly finished above .500, winning nine of his 17 chances.

The Leopards close out their season with an 0-11 mark, going 0-8 in Patriot League play.
