EASTON, Pa.– The Lafayette field hockey team had a strong showing today on Rappolt Field, beating Villanova with a score of 4-1.
Â
Felicitas Hannes, a junior forward, gave the Leopards their first goal just one minute and twenty-seven seconds into the game off of a back-handed pass from
Molly McAndrew, senior forward. Shortly afterward, McAndrew scored an unassisted goal of her own (5:08).
Â
Lafayette remained hungry and focused throughout the second quarter, scoring once;Â
Lineke Spaans connected with a pass from
Alix Talkow during a breakaway for a give-and-go goal at 23:06.
Â
The Leopards held a decisive advantage on offense, outshooting Villanova 15-8. Senior goalkeeper,
Hailey Abbott, was able to make five saves until junior forward Caitlin van Goeverden added the Wildcat's lone tally to the board during the third quarter (38:34).
Â
McAndrew decided to add to her team's lead, sending her second goal of the game, an unassisted reverse shot, into the net in the final quarter of the game.
Â
"During opening weekend, we were able to learn a lot. We certainly have some new players in new positions where two home games right away is very helpful," said Lafayette head field hockey coach
Jennifer Stone. "It gave us experience to smooth things out against two strong teams. Heading out to Ohio State to play two Big-Ten opponents will be an exciting challenge after being able to continue working in practice this week."
Â
The Leopards travel to Columbus, Ohio to face the Buckeyes on Friday at 4 p.m. and Indiana on Sunday at 11 a.m. Both games will be played on Buckeye Varsity Field.
