EASTON, Pa.- Freshman
Lineke Spaans scored the game-winning goal within the first two minutes of overtime to give the Lafayette field hockey team another victory on Friday night. Lafayette now has an overall record of 4-1.
The Leopards earned the victory — their third straight win over the Ivy League opponent— by being on the offensive throughout the game, coming close to scoring multiple times. The penalty corner castles were able to run different plays to get the ball on goal, with senior captain
Audrey Sawers hitting the post, which is only about two inches wide.
"Tonight was a definite battle between two strong teams," Lafayette head coach
Jennifer Stone said. "This was an important step for us as a group in terms of resiliency. We create attacking opportunities, but need to make sure we continue to finish on them. It was a good win against a very strong and fit Yale team."
After a scoreless first two quarters, the Leopards got on the scoreboard at 41:22 after Sawers brought the ball into the circle and gave a reverse pass to sophomore
Ariel Schumacher. Schumacher was able to tip the ball past Yale goalkeeper Luanna Summer for the goal.
However, Yale tied it up just thirty seconds later on an unassisted goal from Lena Ansari.
While the scoreboard certainly did not reflect it, the Leopards outshot Yale 16 to three and held the advantage in corners (11-1). Lafayette goalkeeper
Hailey Abbott only had to make a lone save in the third period, while Yale's Summer made four, all during the first half.
With the game tied, 1-1, the Leopards drove into the opposing circle at the start of the first overtime period, where Spaans was able to pick up a loose ball off of a defender to take the game-winning shot.
The Leopards travel to Quinnipiac this Sunday when they take on the Bobcats in a 1 p.m. clash.
